A 51-year-old petrol pump attendant was fined for using stolen identities to purchase fuel

According to the New Straits Times, the fraud was uncovered after a victim noticed a significant drop in her petrol quota.

The 51-year-old petrol pump attendant was fined RM10,000 by the Magistrate's Court on 5 May after he pleaded guilty to misusing two MyKads to purchase subsidised RON95.

Md Jakir Hossain faced two counts of possessing and misusing the identification cards of two individuals without valid authority. The victims were aged 25 and 31, respectively.

Magistrate Aina Azahra Ariifin ordered Hossain to serve seven months in jail for each charge if he fails to pay the fine

The offences occurred at a petrol station along Jalan Pahang.

One victim, an accountant, discovered the fraud when her subsidised quota dropped from 94.937 litres to 44.637 litres. She contacted the BUDI MADANI Contact Centre and was informed of five suspicious transactions.

She believed her lost MyKad had been taken by a staff member at the station. Investigations using CCTV footage eventually led police to the rented room of Hossain.

During the hearing, deputy public prosecutor Hench Goh urged for a deterrent sentence

"The court must consider the losses incurred as the victims lost their subsidised petrol quota," Goh stated.

Lawyer Low Carmen argued for a lenient sentence, noting that Hossain is the sole breadwinner for his family.

"He is remorseful and has learnt his lesson," Low said.

Hossain had been detained for 12 days prior to his court appearance. The charges were framed under the National Registration Regulations, which carry a maximum fine of RM20,000.
