A popular restaurant in George Town, Penang, has been ordered to close for 14 days after health inspectors uncovered multiple hygiene violations

According to Harian Metro, officers from the Northeast District Health Office found cockroaches, rats, and pest droppings throughout the restaurant's kitchen during an inspection on Wednesday, 17 September.

They also found the kitchen floor slimy and unhygienic, while boxes storing spices were infested with dozens of cockroaches.

Pests were also spotted near the freezer door, while raw meat, chicken, and squid were left outside of proper storage containers.

Food Safety and Quality Unit operations officer M Shashikumaran said the inspection uncovered 20 violations, including food handlers wearing rings and having long, dirty fingernails

"Food was placed directly on the floor, trash bins in the kitchen were uncovered and located near food preparation areas, and broken flooring had stagnant water. The freezer room's floor was also in unsatisfactory condition," he said.

He added that several food handlers had not received typhoid vaccinations, and the food storage area was disorganised and messy.

The restaurant owner was issued three compounds totaling RM3,000, and the eatery was also ordered shut for 14 days starting 17 September.
