A sinkhole appeared on Jalan Burma in George Town, Penang, causing severe traffic jams in the city at around 9am on Sunday, 21 September

The sinkhole, measuring 1.5 metres wide and 2.5 metres long, posed as a significant hazard to motorists as it was big enough for a car wheel or a motorbike to fall into. Cracks were seen along the road near the sinkhole. The affected roads were closed due to safety concerns, resulting in a traffic jam on Jalan Burma.
According to a statement, a water pipe leakage was the cause of the sinkhole.
In response to the incident, staff from the Penang City Council (MBPP) and police were dispatched to the scene to ensure public safety

According to a statement from MBPP on Facebook, they have closed Jalan Burma and are redirecting traffic towards Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong. The damaged section of the road is currently open only to motorcycles as Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) carries out repair work.
The repairs are currently still in progress

The repair work on Jalan Burma is still in progress, though one lane has now been opened to the public.
Despite this, traffic flow remains slow. MBPP advises the public to plan their journeys accordingly and use alternative routes where possible.
