Police have clarified that the "attack" that took place at a polytechnic in Ipoh, Perak was a simulation to test the authorities' counter-terrorism action plan

In a statement this morning, 17 March, Ipoh district police chief ACP Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the exercise, called 'Ex Kurung', was a small-scale exercise aimed to test the preparedness of the police, Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO), and Hospital Permaisuri Bainun (HRPB) in managing and handling crises.

"The presence of numerous police personnel, safety and health vehicles, including a police helicopter from the Air Operations Force (PGU) in PUO and its surroundings, is part of the Ex Kurung exercise," said Zainal.

In the simulation, an unidentified armed group took a lecturer and several students hostage.

"Exercises like this are conducted from time to time to test the effectiveness of the crisis action plan to ensure the safety and public order are always maintained.

"The public is advised not to panic or spread inaccurate speculations related to this incident and exercise," added Zainal.
