A 29-year-old autistic man from Nibong Tebal, Penang, has been named the winner of the 109th Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) Sijil Simpanan Premium Millionaire Draw

According to Berita Harian, Amirul Hakim Hamdan was accompanied by his parents, Hamdan Abdul Hamid, 69, and Yuhani Abd Rahman, 71, to receive the RM1 million mock cheque from BSN Penang director Amir Hamzah on Friday, 14 March.

Hamdan shared that he and his wife had opened a BSN account for Amirul when he was 12

They have been saving for his future since then, but never imagined the account would ever yield such a substantial reward.

"We didn't deposit a fixed amount each month. Any money he received, whether from his siblings or others, was saved in his account as a form of financial security for his future.

"Amirul may not fully grasp the significance of this windfall. We will keep the winnings in his account to let it grow through dividends. We will only use the funds in unforeseen circumstances," said the father.

The sixth of seven siblings, Amirul is non-verbal and requires assistance with daily tasks

"He lives in his own world. He loves picture books — the thicker, the better, and he also enjoys personal care products that smell nice, like shampoo. Whenever we go to the supermarket, that's the first section he runs to," Hamdan shared.

Despite the challenges of raising a child with special needs, the parents said they feel blessed. With their other children married and living outside Penang, Amirul remains the heart of their home.

"As parents of a special needs child, we make sure to give him love, attention, and to never exclude him. He enjoys going for walks, so we always find him a nice place to stroll. Caring for him is a responsibility we cherish," said Hamdan.

Hamdan also acknowledged that looking after Amirul requires patience, especially for his wife, who has made many sacrifices.

"At times, he throws tantrums, hits, or pinches others. It takes a lot of patience, prayers, and tolerance to truly understand his needs," he added.
