The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) has reminded businesses without halal certification that they are strictly prohibited from using terms such as "Muslim-friendly" or "no pork, no lard"
In a video posted earlier this month, the department stressed that such phrases can mislead consumers into thinking a product or service complies with halal standards.
However, without an official Malaysian Halal Certification (SPHM), there is no guarantee that halal requirements are being met, said JAIS.
"Halal standards encompass various aspects, including raw materials, processing, and cleanliness.
"The Trade Descriptions Act 2011 in Malaysia strictly forbids the use of any terms or labels that could mislead consumers.
"Only businesses with a valid SPHM are permitted to use such terminology," a JAIS representative said.

JAIS explained that the phrase "no pork, no lard" only indicates the absence of pork, but does not address other concerns such as alcohol, cross-contamination, or non-halal gelatin
"The use of these terms by non-SPHM holders is considered an incorrect application that can cause confusion and violate regulations," he said.
Under Paragraph 4(1) of the Trade Descriptions (Halal Certification and Marking) Order 2011, it is an offence to mislead consumers about the halal status of food or services.
The order states, "Any person who supplies or offers to supply any food through any representation or act which is likely to mislead or confuse any person that the food is halal or can be consumed by a Muslim commits an offence."
