New MyKad and Malaysian passports featuring enhanced security features will be introduced by the second quarter or early third quarter of this year, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail

According to Malay Mail, Saifuddin said the updated documents, developed by the National Registration Department (JPN) and the Immigration Department, are part of a scheduled renewal cycle.

"This replacement is not done arbitrarily. It is a security responsibility that must be carried out after a certain period of use," he told reporters at a press conference today, 8 January.

Saifuddin said Malaysia's passport is currently ranked the third most trusted in the world for visa-free travel, making the renewal crucial to maintaining its international standing.

"The new document will be equipped with enhanced security features to preserve the integrity of the passport and address the risk of counterfeiting," he said, as quoted by The Star.

He added that the new MyKad will also feature upgraded security features in line with technological developments to prevent forgery.

Saifuddin said existing passports will remain valid until their expiry dates, while the current MyKad can continue to be used

He added that the ministry will notify the public in advance to ensure a smooth renewal process and prevent a sudden surge in applications.

"Continue using your current documents until they reach expiry. Replacements will only be necessary at that time," he said, adding that details on the implementation timeline, updated features, and further announcements will be shared in due course.

As part of preparations for Visit Malaysia 2026, Saifuddin said the ministry will also strengthen border control and immigration measures nationwide

These efforts include facilitating smooth traveller movement without compromising security, enhancing revenue collection in collaboration with the Customs Department, and addressing integrity-related issues.

To improve efficiency and streamline operations, Saifuddin said more autogate systems will be installed at major entry points, including KLIA 1 and 2, the Sultan Iskandar Building, Sultan Abu Bakar Complex, as well as checkpoints in Penang, Kota Kinabalu, and Sarawak.
