Former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has resigned as Perikatan Nasional chairperson amid rising tensions between Bersatu and PAS
In a statement on Facebook today, 30 December, Muhyiddin confirmed his resignation and thanked the coalition's leadership for their support during his five years at the helm.
"I wish the PN leadership and all component parties the very best in their future endeavours," he said, confirming that his resignation will take effect on 1 January 2026.
A source told the New Straits Times that Muhyiddin's resignation only affects his post as PN chairperson, and he will still retain his position as Bersatu president.

Muhyiddin's resignation comes after a political crisis in Perlis, which saw its menteri besar (MB) post taken over by a Bersatu member from PAS
On 22 December, five Bersatu and three PAS assemblypersons withdrew their support for the former MB, Mohd Shukri Ramli.
The five assemblypersons from Bersatu were:
1. Abu Bakar Hamzah (Kuala Perlis)
2. Izizam Ibrahim (Titi Tinggi)
3. Megat Hashirat Hassan (Pauh)
4. Wan Zikri Afthar Ishak (Tambun Tulang)
5. Marzita Mansor (Sena)
Meanwhile, the three PAS assemblypersons were:
1. Saad Seman (Chuping)
2. Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong)
3. Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji)
PAS has since sacked the three assemblypersons and declared their seats vacant. The party then urged Bersatu to do the same for its five assemblymen.
The appointment of Bersatu's Abu Bakar Hamzah as the new Perlis MB drew criticism from several PAS leaders, with one even urging the party to sever ties with Bersatu, reported NST.
