A young Malaysian boy underwent surgery to have 12 teeth removed after doctors discovered severe tooth decay caused by prolonged poor oral hygiene

In a Facebook post, his mother, Siti Nur Haliza, said said he initially started having persistent headaches.

When his condition worsened, with vomiting and loss of appetite, she took him to a clinic, where a doctor prescribed some medication. However, he was still unwell the next day.

A second visit to the clinic resulted in him being admitted to the hospital, as the clinic doctors could not determine the cause of his recurring headaches.

The 4-year-old was referred to Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah (HSNZ) in Kuala Terengganu for a CT scan to rule out a possible brain infection

However, when the scan came back clear, doctors found other issues that required monitoring. According to his mother, they found a small hole in his heart and that his teeth were severely damaged.

Siti shared that her son was then referred to a dental specialist, who discovered that 12 of his teeth were so badly decayed that they could not be saved with regular fillings.

The doctor explained that all 12 teeth had to be extracted.

Siti later explained that her son was diagnosed with "bottle caries" — a condition in infants and toddlers caused by prolonged exposure of their teeth to sugar from milk or formula in a bottle, especially when consumed overnight

This constant exposure erodes the enamel and causes teeth to rot, often beginning with the upper front teeth.

The mother admitted that her son went to bed with a milk bottle every night and never brushed his teeth, which led to his teeth turning black.

Despite this, Siti said she has always done her best for her son, who also lives with eczema, crossed eyes, and other health issues.

She added that she often takes him for medical appointments and is grateful that, after the surgery, he is now healthy, active, and doing well.
