A court in China recently sentenced a mother, Li, to a three-year jail term following an exorcism ritual that turned fatal
According to South China Morning Post, the sentence was suspended for four years after Li accidentally killed her younger daughter while attempting to 'expel' demons in Shenzhen.
Li and her two daughters had reportedly become obsessed with superstitious practices involving telepathy and possession.
They lived under the persistent fear that demons had attacked them and that their souls had been sold.

In December last year, the younger daughter, Xie junior, claimed a spirit possessed her. She requested that Li and her elder sister perform a ritual to save her.
The family used violent methods to induce vomiting, including pressing hard on the girl's chest and pouring water down her throat.
Xie junior initially claimed the process was effective and urged them to continue. Family members discovered the girl's body the following morning.
Medical workers pronounced her dead at the scene after finding her with a bleeding mouth. The court ruled the act as negligent homicide.

Both Li and the elder sister, Xie, received the same suspended sentence, as the court acknowledged their intent was to help the victim
Online observers expressed shock at the incident. One user remarked, "This is such a horrible and silly case," while another questioned if such beliefs still exist in 2025.
"What kind of cult is this? Are we living in the year 2025?" another person added.
