Speaking to Bernama, Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip explained that cold monsoon surges from mainland China have brought temperatures down to a record 18°C in several parts of Malaysia.
Citing weather data, Hisham said minimum temperatures in most areas were below normal between 10 and 13 January, and the trend might continue from 19 to 21 January.
"Temperatures returned to normal this morning (14 January). Not only in Dungun, Terengganu, but also in inland areas such as Dabong and Gua Musang in Kelantan, where readings of 18°C were recorded.
"The current slightly cool temperatures are normal due to winds coming from colder regions," he told the national news agency.

He explained that the chilly temperatures mostly occur during the early hours of the day.
On Wednesday, Bernama reported that a village in Hulu Dungun experienced temperatures between 18°C and 20°C, with a blanket of mist covering the area.
This was an unusual sight for Malaysia, especially at an altitude close to sea level, as such weather is typically only seen in higher places like Cameron Highlands.
Children heading to school and locals on their way to work were spotted wearing jackets to stay warm, which is another rare scene for the country.
