The Ministry of Education (MOE) has announced a ban on 12 categories of food and drinks in schools as part of efforts to promote healthier eating habits among students

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, 23 September, the ministry said the list was drawn up in collaboration with the Ministry of Health's Nutrition Division.

"This ban is part of the ministry's efforts to ensure students practise healthy eating habits and support their proper growth and development," it said.

The following food and drinks are no longer allowed to be sold in schools:

– Processed foods (such as fries, burgers, sausages, nuggets, fishballs, and meatballs when sold as standalone snacks)
– Junk food (such as potato chips, prawn crackers)
– Sweets and chocolates
– Pickled food
– Creamy or sugar-coated items
– Instant noodles of all kinds, including instant soups and seasonings
– Confectionery products and ice cream
– Drinks with toppings, sweet cordial premixes, flavoured syrups, creamers, 3-in-1 powders, or whipping cream
– Carbonated energy, isotonic, or herbal drinks
– Tea and coffee (may only be sold to teachers)
– Food and drinks containing alcohol
– Expired products or items resembling toys
