A midwife in China accidentally severed a newborn's finger during a caesarean section
According to Red Star News, the midwife accidentally severed the newborn's finger while cutting his umbilical cord.
The incident occurred on 25 December 2025 at the Xuyi County People's Hospital.
The infant's father, Sheng, was informed by doctors two hours later that his son's left middle finger had been snipped.

The hospital staff initially attributed the error to the baby suddenly moving during the procedure
The newborn was later transferred through two different hospitals before arriving at Wuxi No 9 People's Hospital.
Located about 300km away, the centre performed a complex implantation operation to reattach the digit.
Xuyi County's Health Commission released a statement on 5 January 2026, describing the event as a "serious error". Authorities confirmed the surgery was successful, and the child is currently undergoing rehabilitation.

The nurse involved was suspended from her duties while the hospital conducts a comprehensive safety overhaul
Health officials stated the case highlighted significant loopholes in medical safety management across the region.
Sheng told the media on 6 January 2026 that his wife remains distraught over the accident. He added that the baby cries frequently due to a steel needle placed inside the finger for support.
The hospital initially proposed a compensation package of 100,000 yuan (RM58,000). They suggested that if the family did not agree, the matter would need to be settled through judicial procedures.
By early January, Sheng confirmed that a compensation agreement had been reached, though final details remain private.
He noted the swelling on his son's finger has subsided, but the family remains cautious.
