Russian authorities confirmed that the town's roughly 2,000 residents have been evacuated, and urged them to remain on high ground until the threat of further waves has fully passed.

Meanwhile, Japan's Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a tsunami advisory, warming that waves as high as 3m could hit areas along the country's east and northeast coast.

Meanwhile, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake was shallow, with a depth of just 19.3km

Its epicentre was located approximately 125km east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a city of 165,000 residents situated along the coast of Avacha Bay.

The USGS had previously revised the earthquake's magnitude upwards from an initial 8.0 to 8.7.

METMalaysia issued three statements on the recent earthquakes in Russia

The first statement was released at 7.24am for a 7.8-magnitude earthquake at the Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, followed by an 8.16am update on a 6.4-magnitude tremor in the same area. A third statement highlighted a 6.0-magnitude quake near at the Kuril Islands.

Despite the series of quakes, METMalaysia confirmed that there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia.
