Six foodpanda delivery riders who helped apprehend a snatch thief last week were honoured by the Melaka police with Certificates of Appreciation today, 29 April

According to the New Straits Times, Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar presented the certificates during a ceremony at the Melaka police headquarters in Bukit Beruang.

One of the riders, 22-year-old Muhammad Haikal Mohd Yasin, said he hadn't expected any form of recognition but was proud to receive the award.

He added that his only intention was to help the police, as the suspect's actions gave honest riders like him a bad name.

In the incident last Wednesday, 23 April, the six riders gave chase to a man who had disguised himself as a delivery rider to carry out a snatch theft

They chased him for 12km from a supermarket in Bachang to Malim before managing to intercept him.

Recalling the incident, Haikal said he and his friends had rushed to the supermarket after a colleague alerted them about the robbery.

"It was indeed challenging, and I had to struggle to catch the suspect, who was aggressive and resisted fiercely in an attempt to escape, before other riders and policemen arrived," he said.

Another rider, Abdul Aziz Ibrahim, 55, shared that the police had informed them earlier that week to be on the lookout for a man posing as a rider to commit crimes

"My friends and I then created a WhatsApp group to help track down the suspect.

"On the day of the incident, I rushed to the location as soon as I received word about the theft, and we successfully detained the man," he said.

He added that they had been aware of the suspect for some time and were relieved he was finally caught.

"Thank you to the police for this recognition. We will continue to work closely with the authorities to curb crime," he said.

A video of the riders reprimanding the suspect before the police arrived went viral:
