MCMC Probes Man Behind FB Post Claiming There’s “Vibranium & Adamantium” In Pahang
Both metals are fictional elements from Marvel Comics.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating a man suspected of uploading fake content regarding the state of Pahang on Facebook
In a statement on Tuesday, 22 April, MCMC said they have recorded a statement from the man suspected to have uploaded the post, which is believed to have been created using artificial intelligence (AI).
MCMC said the Facebook post has sparked public speculation and negative perception surrounding the ongoing issue of illegal farming in Raub.
The man's statement was recorded at the Ampang Jaya police headquarters on 21 April. Authorities also seized a mobile phone and SIM card for forensic analysis.
The post being probed allegedly claims that the disputed land in Pahang contains not just durians, but also "vibranium and adamantium"
According to Malaysiakini, the post also warns that the Avengers and Wakanda would soon join the fight over the land.
A photo accompanying the post purportedly shows durian trees with a large mining operation in the background.
Vibranium and adamantium are both fictional elements from Marvel Comics — vibranium hails from the imaginary nation of Wakanda and is famously used to make Captain America's shield, while adamantium is the virtually indestructible metal bonded to Wolverine's entire skeleton, including his claws.
MCMC emphasised that it will not tolerate the spread of disinformation on social media
The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries penalties of up to RM500,000, two years in prison, or both upon conviction.
"Firm action will be taken against the individuals involved," it said.
