An estimated 1,000 homes were destroyed after a fire tore through the Kampung Bahagia floating village on 19 April, leaving hundreds of families displaced
Victims were relocated to several Temporary Relocation Centres (PPS) as authorities continued to assess losses and coordinate relief efforts.
Following the incident, McDonald's Malaysia said its Sandakan teams were immediately mobilised to provide food assistance to victims, emergency personnel, and volunteers on the ground.
The company said nearly 2,000 meals and beverages were prepared and distributed shortly after the fire.
Further aid is now being carried out across five PPS locations, with an additional 4,000 meals scheduled for distribution through the end of the week
In total, more than 6,000 meals are expected to be provided to the affected community.
"During times like this, what matters most is that communities come together and ensure no one is left to face the situation alone," said Dato' Haji Azmir Jaafar, Managing Director and Local Operating Partner of McDonald's Malaysia.
"The response we've seen across Sandakan reflects that shared responsibility, and we hope these collective efforts bring some comfort to those affected," he said.
Authorities and volunteers have also continued relief operations in the area, focusing on food aid, shelter, and basic necessities
Among the agencies involved are the Department of Social Welfare, the Royal Malaysia Police, the Fire and Rescue Department, RELA, as well as local community groups.
McDonald's Malaysia said the assistance formed part of its wider community outreach efforts nationwide under Program Komuniti @ McDonald's.
The company said it carries out more than 10,000 community-based activities annually, including food sponsorships during disaster relief operations, moreh meals during Ramadan, zakat contributions, and student meal assistance through Program Santun Pelajar.
The initiative aims to provide up to one million meals to students in need by the end of the year
