A man in Hefei, China, recently discovered that "the house always wins" is not just a gambling cliche, but a legal reality
Surnamed He, the man spent a staggering 900,000 yuan (RM508,000) on lottery tickets in a single month in September 2023.
After his massive wager yielded zero winnings, he took the sales agent and the local lottery management centre to court.
According to South China Morning Post, He argued the purchase contract was invalid, claiming agent Zhang used illegal sales methods.

He claimed Zhang's promotion of the tickets on social media and acceptance of bank transfers induced him to squander his money
He demanded a full refund of his 900,000 yuan (RM508,000) plus interest.
The Baohe District People's Court, however, dismissed his claim.
During proceedings, the court was told that Zhang had sent He a risk notification letter.
He had also acknowledged that he was aware of the risks before continuing his betting spree.

The court rejected the lawsuit earlier this month, stating He has full capacity for civil conduct
This means the law views him as an adult who understands that buying a ticket does not guarantee a prize.
The judge noted Zhang repeatedly advised He to spend rationally, yet the warnings were ignored. The presiding judge emphasised that players must remain cautious, especially when large sums are involved.
The case has since gone viral on Chinese social media, with users mocking the man's attempt to recoup his losses.
