A Malaysian man recently took to social media to warn others after he was allegedly scammed out of RM1,400 by someone posing as a property owner

According to @fazeeeeeem on X, he was scouting for a rental in Kuala Lumpur for his sister and her friends, as their dorm contract was about to end.

Wanting to help them settle into a safe and comfortable place, he found a rental listing for an apartment in Cheras on Mudah.my.

"The place looked clean, the price seemed okay, and the area was good. So, I contacted the person listed as the owner on 16 June," he wrote.

Fazeem arranged a viewing of the unit at 8pm on 18 June, bringing his sister and her friends along

"He talked confidently and acted like he really owned the place. He even gave me his IC and showed a previous tenancy agreement to [gain our trust]. The way he carried himself, you would think he's the real thing," he said.

Satisfied with the apartment, Fazeem transferred RM1,400 the next day as a deposit to book the unit.

Fazeem said the man even sent over a tenancy agreement on 21 June, which he signed and returned a few days later. The key handover was scheduled for 28 June.

However, just days before the handover, on 24 June, things took a suspicious turn

Fazeem said the man suddenly asked for another RM2,200, claiming it was to cover the first month's rent and stamp duty.

The renter refused, insisting that he would only make the payment in person once the keys were handed over.

Then came the realisation: on 28 June, the so-called landlord disappeared

"I tried calling him, but it went straight to voicemail. Then, on WhatsApp, it said his number was no longer registered. He deleted his account and vanished just like that," he wrote.

Fazeem said he has since filed a police report and shared photos of the man on social media, hoping to prevent others from falling for the same scam.

"Please be careful. If you've encountered someone like this before, DM me. This probably isn't his first time," he added.
