A bystander has been hailed a hero after bravely tackling and disarming one of two gunmen during a mass shooting at Bondi Beach, Sydney, on Sunday, 14 December, which left at least 16 people dead

According to The Guardian, the man has been identified as 43-year-old Ahmed al Ahmed, a Sydney resident who owns a fruit shop.

Videos circulating on social media show Ahmed crouching behind a parked car before sprinting towards one of the gunmen as shots were being fired. He is seen leaping onto the attacker and wrestling the firearm from his hands.

Footage from the incident shows the gunman falling to the ground as Ahmed briefly points the weapon at him. The gunman then retreats, after which Ahmed places the firearm against a nearby tree and calmly raises his hands in the air.

A family member said Ahmed is currently being treated at a major Sydney hospital, alongside other victims of the attack

The cousin, identified as Mustafa, said Ahmed, a father of two young daughters, is awaiting surgery after being shot twice, once in the upper arm and once in the hand.

"I hope he will be fine. I saw him last night — he wasn't alright, but we're waiting to see what the doctor decides.

"He's a hero, absolutely. He risked his life to save others. I hope everyone in Australia wishes him well so he can get back to his family," Mustafa said on Monday morning, 15 December.

At least 16 people were killed, including one of the gunmen, in what authorities have described as a targeted terrorist attack on a Jewish event held at the famed beach

The Straits Times reported that 40 people, including two police officers, remain hospitalised with injuries.

Authorities said the death toll would have been significantly higher if not for Ahmed's actions.

"There are many, many people alive tonight as a result of his bravery," said New South Wales premier Chris Minns, calling the him "a genuine hero".

Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has condemned the attack, describing the violence as "beyond comprehension"

"This is a targeted attack on Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah, which should be a day of joy and celebration of faith.

"At this dark moment for our nation, our police and security agencies are working to determine anyone associated with this outrage," he said.

Witnesses said the shooting lasted about 10 minutes, sending beachgoers fleeing across the sand and into nearby streets and parks. Police said around 1,000 people had attended the Hanukkah event.
