Man Fined RM2,000 For Killing Stray Dog With Firecracker In Perak

The defence requested a reduced fine, claiming the accused had been repeatedly chased by the dog.

A 64-year-old man was fined RM2,000 by the Batu Gajah Magistrate's Court today, 27 February, for killing a stray dog with a firecracker in January

According to the New Straits Times, Magistrate Azlin Zeti Zainal Abidin imposed the sentence after Wong Phan Sang pleaded guilty to committing mischief by throwing a firecracker at the dog, causing its death.

The court also ordered him to serve two months' jail if he failed to pay the fine.

Wong was charged under Section 428 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of three years' imprisonment, a fine, or both.

The offence took place at around 7.30pm on 28 January in front of a restaurant along Jalan Seroja in Taman Pusing Baru, Perak

According to the facts of the case, CCTV footage from a nearby premises captured the incident, showing the accused throwing an object that exploded upon impact, killing the dog at the scene.

The video later circulated on social media.

Following reports from neighbours, police arrested Wong on 30 January.

During investigations, he handed over a plastic container containing a lighter and six ball-type firecrackers of various colours to the police.

The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Monisha Pandey, while Wong was represented by lawyer Choong Hui Yean

However, the prosecution urged for a heavier sentence as a deterrent, citing a rise in animal abuse cases.

According to The Star, Wong has since paid the fine.
