Malaysians will have the opportunity to witness the biggest supermoon of the year at 9.19pm tonight, 5 November!

According to timeanddate.com, supermoons are the biggest and brightest full moons of the year.

A supermoon looks larger because it will be at its closest point in its orbit around Earth, a point known as perigee, with the distance being about 356,832 km away.

Supermoons generally appear 14% bigger and 30% brighter than when the moon is at its farthest point away from Earth

You can enjoy the sight with the naked eye, although binoculars will give you a better view.

Observing the supermoon away from bright city lights is also better for viewers to appreciate the phenomenon.

While supermoons are best seen at moonrise and moonset, the moon will appear full for about three days.

And that's not all — a meteor shower will also be visible tonight!

According to the Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA), the Southern Taurid meteor shower, active from 23 September to 20 November, is expected to peak between 9pm tonight and the early hours of tomorrow, 6 November.

Viewers may spot around five meteors per hour, though MYSA noted that the brightness of the full moon could affect visibility.
