Malaysia will ban the import of dummy seatbelt buckles and similar devices used to disable car seatbelt warning systems by the end of this year

According to the New Straits Times, the move is part of the Customs (Prohibition of Imports) (Amendment) (No. 2) Order 2025, and will apply to all countries of origin.

The ban includes dummy buckles, seatbelt alarm deactivators, clip extenders, and other products designed to fit into seatbelt slots and silence safety alerts.

These devices undermine vehicle safety by encouraging drivers and passengers to not wear seatbelts.

The Transport Ministry began working with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry on the issue earlier this year

According to Malay Mail, during a Chinese New Year enforcement operation in Negeri Sembilan, it was found that 30% of seatbelt violators had used dummy buckles to mute alarms.

The ministries will now take steps to remove these items — some sold for as little as RM1.99 — from the local market.

Anyone caught using them may also face a compound fine of RM300.
