A 60-year-old Malaysian doctor who went missing while hiking in the Italian Dolomites has been found dead after a suspected fall from a cliff

The woman, identified as Dr Khaw Bee Ling, a physician from the Metro Specialist Hospital in Sungai Petani, Kedah, was reported missing on 17 July while trekking at Croda del Becco, a mountain located between the Ampezzo and Braies Dolomites.

According to multiple Italian news outlets, Dr Khaw was hiking with a friend when they decided to part ways. While her friend turned back, she continued towards the summit. At one point, Dr Khaw sent a message saying she was lost and needed help, but then went silent.

Her friend contacted the authorities, and a full-scale search operation was launched. Rescuers deployed helicopters, drones equipped with thermal cameras, sniffer dogs, and multiple mountain rescue teams. The search continued through the night, reported Antenna Tre.

Her body was spotted by a helicopter at the base of a cliff, wedged in a crevice, a day later, on 18 July

Authorities believe she had strayed off the marked path on the Belluno side of the mountain and accidentally slipped on a steep, wet section of rock, falling nearly 100m, according to La Voce del Trentino.

Her phone's last known location was tracked using an IMSI catcher — a specialised mobile tracking device — which helped narrow down the search zone.

Her remains have been transferred to a morgue in Cortina d'Ampezzo. Italian authorities will handle the necessary procedures.

Dr Khaw's death was confirmed earlier this week by her employer, who described her as a respected colleague in an Instagram post.
