The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has shared details of its investigation into Datin Seri Pamela Ling Yueh and her husband, Datuk Seri Thomas Hah Tiing Siu, in light of her alleged abduction

According to the statement released today, 7 May, MACC's investigation against the couple began in May 2023 and was related to suspected corruption and money laundering offences.

The probe was conducted under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLA), according to Harian Metro.

The agency stated that on 28 May 2024, Ling was summoned to provide a statement as part of ongoing investigations but allegedly failed to cooperate.

Following that, on 2 December 2024, MACC obtained an arrest warrant from the Putrajaya Magistrate's Court after she failed to comply with the order to attend the questioning session.

MACC said that on 8 January this year, a joint operation was carried out with Singapore's Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau, during which Ling was legally detained and brought back to Malaysia

She was remanded from 9 to 11 January 2025 and later released on MACC bail.

The commission also withheld her passport under Section 44(1) of the MACC Act, it said.

Ling was then instructed to return to MACC headquarters on 9 April for further questioning based on new information obtained in the case. However, she was allegedly abducted while en route to the MACC headquarters.

Her lawyer lodged a police report regarding her disappearance.

MACC stressed that all actions taken were within the legal framework, including court orders and procedural compliance, and denied any allegations of misconduct or harassment in the case.

"Allegations of harassment or misconduct are baseless," it said.

The commission also noted that the judicial review Ling had filed prior to her disappearance does not invalidate or halt investigations under existing laws.

She filed the judicial review against MACC just two days before her disappearance, challenging her arrest and remand as lacking proper legal basis, according to her lawyer, Sangeet Kaur Deo.
