A shocking dashcam video captured the moment a bolt of lightning struck an electric pole, causing a nearby transformer to erupt into a massive fireball

The dramatic footage was recorded from a police vehicle in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, in the US on Monday, 11 August 2025.

The incident, which occurred around 11am on Highway 17, resulted in downed power lines, widespread outages, and traffic delays that lasted for roughly three hours.

The Mount Pleasant Police Department shared the video on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "A bit too much excitement for a Monday! The lightning strike caused our power outages and traffic delays. Fortunately, no one was injured."

Social media users were quick to express their shock at the raw power of the strike, with one person commenting, "Good Lord! Looks like a war movie!"

In a surprising twist, one user identified themselves as the driver of the car directly in front of the police vehicle.

"That's me driving right in front of the police vehicle! My windscreen was smashed and some scratches from the downed wires. Thankfully I wasn't hurt, and it doesn't look like anyone else was either," they wrote.
