The National Athletes Welfare Foundation (YAKEB) has stepped in to address the viral video of former national para swimmer Koh Lee Peng appearing distressed

In the video posted by Facebook user Oscar Lye, Koh could be seen crying on a kerb outside a mall in Kuala Lumpur.

The former Paralympic swimmer represented Malaysia at the ASEAN Para Games from 2001 to 2005. One of the finest Paralympic athletes the country has seen, the Penang-born brought home seven gold and three silver medals during those years.

Today, Koh, who is wheelchair-bound due to cerebral palsy, sells tissues for a living.

Her plight captured the hearts of many Malaysians, with many urging authorities to intervene.

YAKEB chairman Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail clarified that Koh has received consistent welfare and medical assistance since 2019

This includes a new electric wheelchair, which was handed over on 20 April to improve her daily mobility.

Beyond hardware, the foundation is coordinating her medical care, including appointments with a neurology specialist at Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

Ahmad Shapawi said this ensures she receives the proper monitoring and treatment she deserves.

"Today, we even took her to a psychiatric and mental health clinic to check on her well-being," Ahmad Shapawi said.

Financially, the support comes from multiple streams. Koh receives more than RM400 a month from the Social Welfare Department (JKM), supplemented by a six-month monthly allowance of RM500 provided by YAKEB.

According to the New Straits Times, she is also set to receive RM3,000 in financial aid from the Association of Malay Importers and Traders of Motor Vehicles Malaysia (PEKEMA) this July.

Ahmad Shapawi added that Koh was previously offered a business kiosk at an LRT station, though she declined.

A visit from Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Mordi Bimol is also expected soon.
