With many Malaysians gearing up to travel home for Hari Raya Aidilfitri, the Road Transport Department Malaysia (JPJ) will be stepping up safety checks on express buses, including deploying officers undercover as passengers

According to Terengganu JPJ director Mohd Zamri Samion, the department has formed five teams involving 10 members who will pose as regular passengers to monitor bus drivers and passenger behaviour during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2026 Special Ops, which runs from 16 to 29 March.

Bernama reported that the move is meant to ensure that drivers remain alert while carrying passengers and that safety rules, including wearing seatbelts, are followed throughout the journey.

These include:

  1. Exceeding the speed limit
  2. Running red lights
  3. Using the emergency lane
  4. Overtaking or cutting across double lines
  5. Jumping queues
  6. Dangerous driving
  7. Using a handphone while driving
  8. Not wearing a seatbelt
  9. Heavy vehicles using highways during restricted peak hours

As part of the operation, JPJ will also enforce a temporary road ban for goods vehicles on highways and major roads nationwide

The ban will be implemented from:

  • 19 to 20 March 2026
  • 28 to 29 March 2026

Authorities say the restriction is meant to ease traffic congestion and reduce accident risks during the busy balik kampung period.
