Imagine winning 600 million yen (RM16 million) and feeling like you can't tell your spouse
This is exactly the situation a 66-year-old Japanese retiree, known only as S, found himself in after hitting the jackpot.
Instead of popping champagne with his partner, he decided to keep the massive windfall a secret because his wife is extremely frugal.
According to The Gold Online, the couple lives in Tokyo on a pension of 300,000 yen (RM7,900) a month.

Despite having significant savings, S felt stifled by his wife, who had banned him from drinking alcohol and only allowed him to drive an old car
To explain the extra cash, he told her he won a mere 5 million yen (RM130,000) to cover home renovations, while quietly pocketing the rest.
S began living a double life, splashing out on a luxury car and taking solo trips to high-end hot spring resorts.
He spent 18 million yen (RM470,000) in just six months, even parking his new car in a rented spot and wearing old clothes to avoid suspicion.

However, the thrill didn't last long; S admitted to feeling isolated when seeing families on his travels, which reminded him of his own father's lonely death
"If this money had been earned through my own efforts, I would be proud of it," he said.
"But wealth that comes without effort brings up unpleasant memories and shakes my life," he added.
Ultimately, S consulted a financial planner and invested nearly 500 million yen (RM13 million) into insurance policies for his wife and children, ensuring they are taken care of when he dies.
