In a moment watched around the world, an Iranian news anchor was seen sobbing on state television while announcing the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed on Saturday, 28 February

"God is great. God is great," the anchor said through tears.

He announced to the nation that the Grand Ayatollah, the leader of the Islamic Revolution, had been "martyred" in a joint attack by the US and the "Zionist regime".

As the newsreader struggled to maintain his composure, the sound of others crying off-screen in the studio could be heard

The broadcast marked the end of an era for the 86-year-old leader who had ruled since 1989.

The TV announcer noted that the leader's "long dream of martyrdom" had finally been realised.

It was highlighted that he died during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, a period of deep significance for the nation.

The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) claimed the Supreme Leader was at his workplace when the incident happened

He was reportedly working in his office within his compound when it was hit by an airstrike.

Reports indicate that the daytime attack took place at 8.10am local time (12.40pm Malaysian time). The strike reportedly involved intelligence from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to pinpoint the leader's location.

Following the confirmation, the Iranian government declared 40 days of national mourning and a seven-day public holiday

While the nation mourns, Iran's Supreme National Security Council stated that the "criminal" actions of the US and Israel would not go unanswered.

The transition of power is expected to be overseen by a council that includes the Iranian president.
