Influenza cases in Thailand have surged to over 700,000 since the beginning of this year, with 61 deaths reported, according to the country's Office of Disease Prevention and Control (ODPC)

In a statement on Thursday, 14 October, the ODPC advised the Thais to be cautious during the transition from the rainy to the cooler season, as changing weather conditions facilitate the spread of influenza.

"The changing weather at the end of the rainy season and the beginning of winter is a key factor," ODPC 9 Director Dr Taweechai Visanuyothin told the Bangkok Post.

"It increases the risk of respiratory infections, especially influenza, which is spreading more easily this year," he added.

Dr Taweechai noted that the situation is a cause for concern

He said that from 1 January to 8 October, the cumulative cases reached 702,238, representing an incidence rate of 1,081.83 per 100,000 population.

He added that the disease is transmitted through coughing, sneezing, or contact with mucus and saliva droplets, and often causes cluster outbreaks in places like schools and workplaces.

Dr Taweechai said Thai health authorities will continue to monitor the situation closely and are working to ensure vaccine access across the country

The ODPC is also advising high-risk groups, including the elderly and young children, to get their annual flu vaccinations.

People are also encouraged to avoid crowded places, wear face masks, and wash their hands frequently.
