A man in China who abandoned his paralysed wife after selling their home has told police he would "rather go to jail than return"

The woman, surnamed Lin, was allegedly deceived by her husband into selling their home worth one million yuan (RM593,000), after which he disappeared for five years, leaving her with nothing.

Lin, a former tour guide, was diagnosed with a rare disease affecting her central nervous system in 2017, according to Yangtze Evening News.

The condition developed four years into her marriage, leaving her completely paralysed.

"I was in a wheelchair every day, watching people hanging around outside and wondering why I was stuck like this," Lin said

It was during this vulnerable time that her husband, surnamed Chang, convinced her to sell their home before disappearing with all the proceeds.

Chang was finally arrested at the end of 2022 after going into hiding for five years.

In March 2024, a court sentenced him to 10 months in prison for abandonment.

Lin has since successfully filed for divorce

The court granted her request and a judicial aid allowance of 65,000 yuan (RM39,000) due to her financial situation.

The case has gone viral on mainland social media, with many expressing shock over the husband's actions and what they see as a light punishment.

"This man is so ruthless. His punishment is lenient," said one online observer. Another person commented, "It is cost-efficient to spend 10 months in jail in exchange for a whole life."
