A 36-year-old woman in Henan, China, gained widespread sympathy online after her husband of 16 years divorced her over a skin disease
The woman, surnamed Li, began suffering from vitiligo two years ago, a chronic condition that led to pigment loss and left a large bald patch on her head.
According to Henan TV, instead of offering support, her husband reportedly disdained her and refused to pay for her medical treatment, claiming her appearance made him "lose face".
"I have devoted myself to the family. I take care of our child, wash clothes, prepare food, and do other domestic chores," Li said.
Li added that her husband stopped inviting her to social gatherings or dinners with relatives. He was reportedly embarrassed by her illness-induced hair loss.
The situation was made worse by children on the street who cruelly mocked her appearance, comparing her to an ugly character from a television drama.
A senior doctor noted that while vitiligo affects 0.5 to 2% of people globally, Li's condition deteriorated quickly due to her high levels of anxiety.
Despite the heartbreak, Li accepted the divorce and custody of their child, seeking a fresh start
She, too, decided to move forward with a positive mindset, focusing on her health after the marriage ended.
"I will let go of my past and cooperate with the treatment in a positive manner," she concluded.
