A look back at Hogan's life and career
Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, was a key figure who spearheaded the professional wrestling industry in the 1980s.
His over-the-top stage persona and distinctive appearance set him apart as someone who was more myth than man, and was beloved by millions. He appeared in films (notably alongside Sylvester Stallone in Rocky III, where he hospitalised three stuntmen on the set), late-night talk shows, and commercials.

By the 1985 tournament, he was already a fan favourite, with millions watching as he delivered the leg drop, the move that would become his signature.
With the stage persona of an American patriot, Hogan would develop a long-time "nemesis" relationship with Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri, better known by his ring name, The Iron Sheikh.

Hogan infamously used racial slurs in a leaked 2007 tape, in which he ranted about his daughter Brooke Hogan's relationship, an incident that led to his name being scrubbed from WWE's Hall of Fame until he was reinstated in 2018.
He was also known for his infidelities, including an affair with a friend of his then-teenage daughter.
Hogan was also an outspoken supporter of Donald Trump and the Republican Party, appearing at the 2024 Republican National Convention, where he famously ripped his shirt off while proclaiming his loyalty and support to Trump.
