Health Ministry Steps In After Gross Contaminants Found In Water From Vending Machines

Come 1st January 2016, water vending machines operators will need to have license from the Health Ministry to run their business.

A new regulation for water vending machines operators will come into enforcement on 1st January 2016, Health Ministry Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said

According to Dr. S. Subramaniam, the Ministry of Health (MOH) has given the industry stakeholders enough time to comply the regulation as it was gazetted on Sept 24, 2012

Last year, a test by The Star and Forum Air Malaysia found that water from vending machines contained harmful E. coli, Coliform and Clostridium perfringens microbes – the same kind of bacteria found in untreated sewage

These bacteria can cause cramps, diarrhoea and other gastrointestinal problems

The Health Ministry has also conducted checks on a total of 630 water vending machines nationwide since August 2014, and 786 water samples have been collected from the affected machines
