The Health Ministry has ordered a comprehensive structural and digital audit of Hospital Ampang following a pipe leak incident at its operating theatre on Monday, 27 April

Videos circulating online show water gushing from the ceiling, with some claiming the OT ceiling had partially collapsed.

The incident was also alleged to have disrupted hospital IT systems, forcing staff to switch to manual processes and causing delays.

In a statement the next day, the Selangor State Health Department (JKNS) confirmed the leak, saying it was caused by a broken cold water pipe in the operating theatre corridor

It added that the situation was quickly brought under control and repair works are ongoing.

"Thorough inspections and repairs are being carried out in the affected area to ensure that such an incident does not recur," it said.

JKNS added that some OT operations were affected by the incident, but contingency measures were activated, with staff moving critical cases to safe operating rooms while elective procedures were postponed.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said he has visited the hospital and directed a full audit to address issues linked to its ageing infrastructure

"The past seven days have been a tough time for Hospital Ampang. I am closely overseeing the remedial actions to address recent digital and infrastructure challenges. We are moving with urgency to restore normalcy; patient safety remains our non-negotiable priority," he said.

He added that repair works for the pipe leak have been completed, but sterilisation, cleaning, and air quality checks are still being carried out in the operating theatre.

"There'll be no compromise; the OT will only resume once 100% infection control compliance is verified," he said.

Dr Dzulkefly also said system checks and data validation for the hospital's eHIS patient records system are ongoing, and thanked frontline staff for their dedication and efforts in managing the disruptions.
