The Education Ministry (MOE) will announce tomorrow, 20 January, whether the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) and Pentaksiran Tingkatan 3 (PT3) examinations will be reinstated

According to the New Straits Times, the announcement will be made during the launch of the National Education Development Plan 2026–2035.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the decision aims to improve the quality of education after taking into account students' needs and the potential for a more holistic assessment system.

"It is about looking ahead and ensuring our children are prepared through a more comprehensive assessment.

"This means we will make improvements by reviewing the entire learning matrix. What we announce tomorrow will address that question, as it ultimately concerns quality," she said during an interview on Hot FM today, 19 January.

The discussion on reinstating the Year 6 and Form 3 final examinations follows Fadhlina's statement last week that her ministry had set up a council to study their reintroduction

She said the study is expected to be completed this year, following the appointment of members to the National Education Advisory Council (MPPK), reported Bernama.

At the 2025 UMNO General Assembly on Saturday, 17 January, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said both exams should be reinstated.

Echoing similar views, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia's Institute for Inclusive Development and Advancement of Malaysia deputy director Dr Anuar Ahmad said the exams are necessary as a national assessment system to identify students' performance levels nationwide using a single, standardised, equivalent, and centralised test, reported NST.

UPSR and PT3 were abolished in 2021 and 2022, respectively, and replaced with school-based assessments.
