Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the government will provide free education via the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) for 5,800 students from underprivileged families, beginning in 2026
The announcement was made during the tabling of Belanjawan 2026 today, 10 October.
"PTPTN was born from the commitment to lift the nation's children out of poverty through education," Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said.
He added that the initiative, which applies to students in public higher learning institutions (IPTA), will involve an annual allocation of RM120 million.
For years, the PTPTN loan has been a lifeline for Malaysian students and their families

26-year-old Kausyigan said the PTPTN loan has been a tremendous support in easing his family's financial burden.
"It enabled me to pursue my tertiary education without the constant worry of tuition fees and living expenses," he said, commending the government's initiative to extend a similar opportunity to underprivileged students.
"I hope this programme will be implemented with inclusivity and transparency. While covering tuition fees is a critical step, many students also struggle with other costs like accommodation, transportation, food, and learning materials. Expanding support to these areas would further empower students to succeed."
As for 26-year-old Kavitha, she credits PTPTN for covering almost 90% of her higher education costs.
"I could fully focus on my studies, which made a huge difference. I managed to graduate with first class honours, which also meant my entire loan was waived," said Kavitha.
"I strongly believe that every capable student deserves access to education, regardless of their background and this initiative reflects that value perfectly," she commented, adding how free education is a strategic step towards breaking the cycle of poverty.
