A Malaysian woman in her 30s has been detained by Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) enforcement officers after allegedly living with a foreign man for two years and giving birth to a child out of wedlock

The raid was conducted at 10am yesterday, 13 October, at a house occupied by the woman and her partner, a foreign construction worker in his 40s.

In Malaysia, 'khalwat' is an offence defined as two unrelated people of the opposite sex being in proximity or alone together, especially if at least one is Muslim. It is considered an offence under Islamic Sharia law and involves being in a private or isolated place, like a room or even a park, which can be subject to legal penalties.

JAINJ officers found the man wearing a sarong without a shirt and the woman clad only in a batik cloth, both of whom appeared groggy as if they had just woken up during the raid

According to the New Straits Times, initial investigations confirmed that the couple had been cohabiting for the past two years. They also have a three-month-old baby, who was born in a hospital and issued a birth certificate.

The man, a handyman by trade, allegedly tried to flee through the back door but was caught by the officers.
