A Facebook post by a father detailing the values he expects his sons to uphold while wearing the Jalur Gemilang badge at school has gone viral, even earning praise from the prime minister

Ng Chee Kean, who has over 22,000 followers on Facebook, shared the post on Monday, 21 April, the day his children started wearing the badge, which has been made compulsory in schools.

In his post written in Bahasa Melayu, Ng referred to his sons as "Upin Ipin" and said he had set a few clear conditions that come for wearing the Malaysian flag on their uniforms.

"These rules must be understood and practised, not just worn for show. One must understand the wisdom and responsibility that comes with being a student in a national school," he wrote.

Ng added that if teachers asked why his sons were not wearing the badge, they would be instructed to reply: "Papa is holding it because my Bahasa Melayu is not good enough."

Among the conditions are:

1. The badge must be treated with respect. It should not be allowed to get dirty or fall to the ground, and the school uniform should no longer be carelessly discarded.

2. When the Jalur Gemilang is on their chest, priority must be given to speaking in Bahasa Melayu, especially when interacting with canteen staff and greeting schoolmates, even in Chinese schools.

3. Their proficiency in the national language must improve. If it worsens or stagnates, he said he would remove the badge until it does.

The post has since garnered over 13,000 likes, 3,800 shares, and 1,200 comments, with one notable comment coming from Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim himself

Anwar wrote, "Thank you for helping to nurture love for the country."

The comment has since received over 700 likes, becoming the top comment in the post.
