A former aide to a federal minister was sentenced to six years' jail and fined RM8.8 million by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today, 20 November, after being found guilty of accepting RM1.76 million in bribes seven years ago

According to FMT, Saifullah Minggu, 34, who served as senior private secretary to then-tourism, arts, and culture minister Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi, broke down in tears as Judge Suzana Hussin delivered the sentence.

Saifullah was convicted on eight counts of accepting bribes from Inter Bev Network Sdn Bhd owner Ronald Seto

The payments were an incentive for him to help the company secure a tender for brand and creative production services.

The offences were committed at various locations through intermediary Roslan Lahada between December 2018 and March 2019.

In delivering the sentence, Suzana said the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt

She also ordered Saifullah to serve an additional seven years in prison if he is unable to pay the fine, and reminded him to reflect on his actions.

"You are still young, and it is hoped that you will take this opportunity to reform and turn for the better," the judge said, as quoted by the New Straits Times.

The court allowed Saifullah's application for a stay of execution pending his appeal to the High Court and set bail at RM280,000, with instructions for him to surrender his passport until the case is concluded.
