Electric Train Service (ETS) will now operate 24 hours a day during major festive periods, starting with the upcoming Chinese New Year and Hari Raya, as part of efforts to meet higher travel demand
At a press conference today, 28 January, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the move is aimed at increasing passenger capacity and optimising Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad's (KTMB) assets.
According to the New Straits Times, Loke said KTMB has been instructed to fully utilise its entire train fleet during festive seasons, moving away from its previous "cautious approach" of keeping spare train sets on standby.
"Previously, KTMB did not fully utilise all train sets during festive seasons, keeping some in reserve in case of malfunctions," he explained.
Moving forward, KTMB will deploy all available train sets and introduce additional, non-scheduled services during peak travel periods.

This will increase ETS services from 34 to 46 trips per day, including midnight services, allowing KTMB to boost both service frequency and passenger capacity
Loke added that ETS remains a popular choice among travellers as it is faster and more convenient than driving, allowing passengers to work or read on board while travelling safely between major cities in Peninsular Malaysia.
He also noted that the introduction of train services between Butterworth and Bangkok opens up new opportunities for tourism and regional connectivity.
"The aim is to increase capacity, improve service frequency, and ensure more people can purchase tickets and benefit from the service," he said.
