What was meant to be a quick shopping trip ahead of a long-awaited family holiday ended in tragedy when a couple were killed in a multi-vehicle crash on Seremban–Port Dickson Highway on Tuesday night, 29 October

The victims, Chok Woon Keong, 65, and his wife Yong Foong Ting, 67, were riding their Honda ADV350, an adventure-style scooter, when the accident happened at about 8.50pm near the 11.5km mark of the highway heading towards Seremban.

According to police, the crash involved two cars, a van, and the couple's scooter.

Preliminary investigations showed that a van travelling from Port Dickson suffered a front-tyre burst, causing the driver to lose control and the vehicle to overturn across the emergency and left lanes, reported China Press.

The couple, who were riding in the emergency lane, tried to avoid the overturned van by swerving into the next lane, but were struck by an SUV travelling in that direction.

Both husband and wife, who lived in Lukut, were killed on the spot.

Seremban deputy police chief Subt Muhd Amrul Yazid Anuar said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

The couple's son-in-law, Chiak Wei Liang, 32, said they had planned to meet family members in Seremban to shop for winter clothes and travel supplies for their upcoming family vacation to Shanghai

"At about 8.22pm, they sent us a WhatsApp message saying they were ready to go shopping," Chiak said.

"We were all set to buy winter clothes for our trip with 15 relatives."

When the couple stopped answering calls after half an hour, the family started to worry. Chiak then asked a relative to drive along the highway to check.

"When he arrived at the scene, police were already there. After they looked at the identification cards, we realised they were my in-laws," he was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times.

The couple are expected to be laid to rest on Saturday.

Chiak also urged motorists who were on the highway during the incident to come forward with any dashcam footage to assist the police investigation.
