Two elderly passengers were filmed in a physical altercation with a young woman on the Shanghai Metro after she allegedly refused to give up her seat
The incident was filmed by a nearby passenger and later uploaded to social media, where it quickly drew widespread attention.
According to Oriental Daily, the elderly couple had reportedly asked the woman to give up her seat to one of them, but she declined, saying she was on her period and feeling unwell, before the situation escalated into an altercation.
Video footage from the crowded train showed the elderly woman physically assaulting the younger woman, repeatedly hitting her face, pulling her hair, and spitting on her
Meanwhile, the elderly man appeared to try restraining the situation but was also seen spitting at the younger woman during the altercation.
The younger woman could be seen struggling as the elderly woman grabbed her hair while shouting at her.
Despite the escalating confrontation, surrounding passengers appeared to watch from a distance without intervening.

The incident quickly went viral online, with many netizens criticising the elderly pair's behaviour
Some pointed out that the elderly passengers appeared agile enough to fight, questioning whether they really needed the seat.
Others said giving up seats on public transport should be an act of goodwill rather than an obligation, adding that the seat involved was not a designated priority seat.
Local police have issued a warning regarding the incident
Authorities warned that those who disrupt public order on public transportation can be subject to administrative detention.
It added that assaulting others or intentionally causing bodily harm could also result in five to 10 days of detention and a fine.
