Police have deployed drones to monitor motorcyclists along the Federal Highway, as part of an initiative to curb accidents and enforce the use of the dedicated motorcycle lane

A one-hour operation conducted recently on 11 June saw 47 compounds issued, including 20 for failing to use the designated motorcycle road.

Petaling Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrulnizam Ja'afar said the operation focused on motorcycles, citing alarming statistics that over 70% of all road fatalities involve motorcyclists and pillion riders.

Shahrulnizam said a joint team from the district's Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department and Drone Unit was stationed at KM28.4 of the Federal Highway

"Sixteen kilometres of the Federal Highway run through Petaling Jaya, and we want to ensure motorcyclists use the dedicated motorcycle lane to prevent accidents," he told the media yesterday, 11 June.

"As an added measure to show that we are serious, we teamed up with the Bukit Aman Air Wing's Drone Unit to identify and take action against motorcyclists who are not riding on the motorcycle lanes.

"Some of these motorcyclists were seen speeding off and evading our personnel there by keeping to the extreme right lane.

"What they do not know is that we had eyes in the sky with the Drone Unit deployed there at the time. The drone, which is equipped with a high definition camera, is capable of capturing these vehicle number plates clearly," he said, adding that the riders who escaped would receive a compound notice by mail.

Shahrulnizam said a total of 47 compounds were issued for various infractions during the operation

Among these, 20 were for failing to use the designated motorcycle lane, while 12 were for misusing the emergency lane.

Another five compounds each were issued for offences such as modified exhausts, not having side mirrors, and non-standard number plates.

"The drone unit also captured images of 16 motorcyclists who were not using the motorcycle lane," he added.

Future operations will be conducted during peak hours, particularly in the mornings

He reported that statistics from January to May this year show 204 accidents involving motorcyclists occurred along the Federal Highway.

This marks a 35% increase compared to the 151 cases logged during the corresponding period last year.
