Melaka police have recorded the statement of a driver who placed a Hebrew sign on his vehicle that reportedly reads "Malaysia is our home"

According to Sinar Harian, the driver has been identified as a 59-year-old retired civil servant.

State police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the man admitted that the sticker, which was affixed to the back of his pickup truck, was purchased from a shop in Selangor 13 years ago.

The man claimed he used the Hebrew sign out of interest in foreign scripts, including Greek and Russian.

"The man came across the Hebrew phrase 'Israel Beteinu', which means 'Israel is our home'. He later modified it by replacing 'Israel' with 'Malaysia' when creating the sticker," said Dzulkhairi during a press conference today, 9 October.

He also said the man described himself as a patriot who also admires the Hebrew language.

Although the driver's statement has been recorded, police investigations are ongoing

Authorities will also consult language experts to verify that the sticker does not contain any suspicious or inflammatory elements.

Dzulkhairi added that the driver, who retired four years ago, lodged a police report after noticing his vehicle had gone viral on social media.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for actions likely to cause public fear or alarm, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of telecommunication services.

Earlier this week, a 14-second video of the vehicle went viral. Preliminary investigations found that the Hebrew sign likely reads either "Malaysia is our home" or "Malaysia is in our hands".

A photo circulating on social media also shows the vehicle with a sticker that reads "ESPN Zone Arizona" and a licence plate frame bearing the words "New York".
