A playful moment between a couple in China spiralled into a criminal investigation after a man accidentally broke his girlfriend's chest bone

Instead of heading straight to the hospital to treat the injury, the pair hatched a plan to stage a car accident to claim a massive insurance payout.

According to Hongxing News, the incident occurred in Sichuan, China in June 2024, when the man, Wang, jumped onto his girlfriend's back and asked her to carry him.

The sudden pressure caused a fracture in the woman's chest. However, the couple hesitated to seek medical help because the treatment was costly.

Wang drove his girlfriend, Lan, to a remote intersection about an hour later and positioned her against the rear of the car to mimic an accidental collision

Lan was admitted to hospital, where Wang convinced the insurer to advance them tens of thousands of yuan for treatment, citing financial difficulties.

Upon her discharge, Lan filed a claim for over 200,000 yuan (RM117,000), concealing the true cause of her injury.

The insurance company alerted the police after noticing several red flags, including the couple's relationship and the lack of impact signs on the vehicle

Photos also showed Lan resting on a pillow in an unnatural position, leading authorities to conclude the scene was staged.

Wang and Lan were arrested on suspicion of insurance fraud. They now face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of 200,000 yuan (RM117,000).

The story has gone viral on Chinese social media, with many baffled by the couple's reckless act.
