The Public Service Department (JPA) is encouraging civil servants to wear batik to work as an alternative to formal office attire
In a statement on Monday, 6 April, Public Service director-general Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz said the move is in line with the Human Resource Service Circular (MyPPSM) Section UP.7.2.3 on dress etiquette and the appearance of public officers.
"Under paragraph 5, Schedule 1 (iii) for male officers and paragraph 8, Schedule 2 (ii) for female officers, batik attire is mandatory every Thursday and encouraged on all working days as an alternative to office wear," he said.

He added that the move aligns with the government's decision to set air-conditioning temperatures in government offices at a minimum of 24°C as part of energy-saving efforts
Wan Ahmad Dahlan also said heads of department may allow officers to wear corporate or fieldwork attire on certain days for specific duties.
However, he stressed that wearing batik on Thursdays remains compulsory, and the ruling does not apply to officers who are required to wear uniforms.
