A menswear company in China is facing criticism over a laundry care tag that is being slammed for allegedly discriminating against women

The tag, attached to a coat, had no washing instructions. Instead, it read in both Chinese and English: "Please give it to your beloved woman, she knows everything."

The clothing item was manufactured by the Jiangsu-based Gu Zhuo Kang Zheng Garment Company, which owns brands like Labour Union.

According to Lizhi News, the tag also featured two QR codes that linked to the company's social media account. Public backlash erupted after an Internet user posted the tag online, and the image went viral.

A company spokeswoman, known as Sister Yang, quickly apologised and stated that the company had no intention of discriminating against women

She explained that the "inappropriate expression", as well as the misspelling of some English words, led to a public misunderstanding that the company looked down on women or aimed to provoke opposition between the sexes.

"That is not our original intention," Yang was quoted as saying.

She said the company noted that some customers, both male and female, had damaged garments made from special materials because they did not follow specific washing instructions.

Yang said "some men knew little about garment material and washing, while females tended to care about these details." Because of this, the company wanted to encourage customers and those around them to follow proper washing methods.

"Due to our insufficient capacity to express ourselves, we did not convey our message correctly. I am very sorry about that," Yang said.

The news sparked a mixed reactions across mainland social media platforms, with many suggesting better phrases for the tag

"Why not print the complete washing method and add a sentence like, 'Please finish reading this and learn how to wash clothes for the sake of your beloved person'?" one user commented, while others called for a boycott of the brand.

However, some people did not see the issue.

"I do not think there is any problem with the tag. I do not understand how this could cause a confrontation between men and women," one Internet user commented.
