A total of 714 children died in road crashes between January and September this year, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke
Citing data from the Home Ministry, Loke stated that 2,880 road accidents involving children were recorded during that period.
He described the number of fatal incidents as having reached a "serious level".
Many of these deaths were linked to the failure to use safety restraints.

Of the total cases, 156 incidents involved children who were not wearing seat belts, which resulted in 74 deaths, Loke said
Loke said this in a written parliamentary reply to Kepong member of parliament (MP) Lim Lip Eng on 13 October, according to Malay Mail.
He noted that while the compliance rate for drivers and front passengers has surpassed 90%, the use of seat belts among rear passengers remains worryingly low, averaging only 10 to 15%.

The Transport Ministry (MOT), through the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), will enhance awareness and enforcement measures
These efforts include digital outreach campaigns and joint operations with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).
A special enforcement phase targeting express and tour buses began in September 2025 to ensure drivers and passengers comply with seat belt rules.
"MOT is confident that with stricter enforcement and sustained awareness campaigns, seat belt use… can be further improved," Loke added.
